HAND SANITIZER AND CHILDREN...HOW SAFE ARE WE?
Recently, a 4 year old girl named Halley was rushed to the emergency room from school for being severely lethargic and incoherent. She was said to be "very, VERY sick." She was barely sitting in the chair at the E.R. and she couldn't hold her own head up and HER eyes could not focus.
Blood tests were ran, X-rays were done and just about every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal; nothing was out of the ordinary. The ER doctor said he had done everything that he could do, so he was sending her to Saint Francis for further tests.
Just as she was leaving for Saint Frances, her teacher had come to the ER and after questioning Halley’s classmates, the teacher found out that she had licked hand sanitizer off her hand. 'Hand sanitizer' of all things! But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of things in their mouths.
When Halle arrived at Saint Francis, her parents told the ER doctor to check her blood alcohol level, which they got weird looks from it, but they did and the result was that her blood alcohol level was 85% and this was 6 hours after she was first looked at.
There is no telling what her Blood Alcohol Level would have been if she was tested at the first ER. Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken 'hand sanitizer' out of the classrooms.
After doing research off the Internet, it was found that it only takes 3 squirts of the hand sanitizer to be fatal in a toddler. For her blood alcohol level to be so high was to compare someone her size to drinking Alcohol that is 120 proof. PLEASE don't disregard this. Be aware of your toddlers surroundings and make sure this doesn't happen to another child!
