Permanent makeup, also known as dermapigmentation, micropigmentation, and cosmetic tattooing, is pigment injected just beneath the skin in the same way tattoos are applied. As its name suggests, permanent makeup is a replacement for daily application of makeup, and is often identical in appearance. It is applied by cosmetic professionals, usually over the course of several visits to their centers. Permanent makeup is convenient for women who cannot apply makeup due to allergies, vision problems, or movement problems such as arthritis, or for women who just want the appearance of a made-up face without the daily investment in time and monetary cost of cosmetics. Permanent cosmetics can be used around the eyes to create permanent eye liner and permanent eyebrows and on the lips to mimic the appearance of permanent lip liner. This procedure can also be undertaken to correct a perceived deformity: it is sometimes used in conjunction with breast implants to give the appearance of the existence of an aureole on the breast after it has been removed during a mastectomy, or to cover up scars on the face. Permanent makeup can also serve as an eyebrow replacement. This procedure yields permanent results, but like regular tattoos, cosmetic tattoos are extremely difficult or impossible to remove, and the removal of them may leave permanent scarring or discoloration.
