Let's Move Boca!

Official FLIPANY event in Downtown Boca Raton
When: Sunday, October 21st, 2012
Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Where: Royal Palm Place, Boca Raton, FL (Federal Highway, just south of Palmetto Park Road
Why: Did you know that 33.6% of low- to moderate-income preschool children (ages 2-4) enrolled in Palm Beach County’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program and 61.3% of adults in Palm Beach County are overweight or obese (Florida CHARTS)?
The cost for prescription drugs, emergency room treatment and outpatient services related to childhood obesity is estimated to be more than $14 billion a year, with an additional $238 million in in-patient hospital costs, according to the Children's Defense Fund. The obesity epidemic is a severe public health crisis, and experts agree that as more and more obese children become obese adults, there will be a huge increase in the number of diseases associated with obesity such as heart disease and diabetes.
A local group of advocates has joined together on a campaign to fight this epidemic through the creation of an annual Health/Wellness Fair in Palm Beach County, Florida. This year’s event, Let’s Move Boca, will be held at Royal Palm Place in Downtown Boca, and will showcase healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness classes, nutrition presentations, fun activities for kids and adults, as well as a vendor fair.
“Our goal is to create awareness in our community about the obesity epidemic, and to give families the tools and resources they need to live a more active and healthy life style.” said Denise Righetti, Let’s Move Boca chairperson.
Not only is the event a great way for the South Florida community to get active and learn about healthy lifestyles on October 21st, but 100% of the proceeds will go towards sustaining health and wellness programs in the community throughout the year through the local non-profit FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth). FLIPANY delivers nutrition education and physical activity programs in Palm Beach County to low-income youth, families, and seniors. “I am very thankful for Let’s Move Boca” and am excited about spreading the word to Palm Beach residents about getting and staying healthy!”, said Lynne Kunins, FLIPANY’s Executive Director.
Program Description: For an entry fee of just $15, participants will receive a t-shirt and an all-access pass to group fitness classes such as Zumba, Kickboxing, Hip Hop & Ballroom Dancing, Yoga & Pilates, demonstrations, performances and featured activities. There will be a vendor area, healthy cooking demo stage with 5 live cooking performances, a technique table to showcase knife skills, juicing and many other cooking techniques, nutrition presentations by experts in the field, as well as the opportunity to be a part of the event's featured activity: a live taping of Boca's first organized "Dance Walking", a movement that's sweeping the globe.
