Walk Under The Stars Charity Event

Eighth grader co-chairs charity fundraiser:

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. -- Melanie Moskow of Coral Springs co-chaired and sponsored the Kids Day at the second annual Walk-Under-the-Stars charity event on St. Patrick’s Day at the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton. The event benefited children with cystic fibrosis through The Reach for the Stars Foundation.

Moskow, an eighth grader at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, is the latest in a family known for giving back to the community. She also became familiar with the importance of community service as an NBPS student, because the private college preparatory school believes that giving back is an integral part of what makes one a well-rounded individual. Thus, Moskow recently combined teacher Andrew Kirschner’s social studies class project with community service that holds special meaning for teenagers by helping children.

After doing extensive research and making several inquiries, Melanie selected The Reach for the Stars Foundation as her benefiting organization. It had been started by NFL quarterback Jay Fiedler in honor of Ellie Levy, a family friend who was 15 just like Moskow. Moskow saw the coincidence in their ages and decided that this was a great charity where she could make a difference.

Thanks to the teen’s support and the support of the Coral Springs Newcomers, the Walk-Under-the-Stars helped to raise over $30,000 on the day of the walk and more donations are still coming in. Even Coral Springs Mayor Scott J. Brook and his wife Brenda attended the successful event as more than 200 walkers enjoyed the Melanie Moskow Kid’s Zone that featured a bounce house, face painting, and other games and activities for children.

“We are very proud of Melanie,” said NBPS Headmaster David Hicks. “Like so many of our students, she is learning about the world outside the classroom as well as in it. She feels compassion for others and understands the need to contribute to her community. Mr. Kirschner’s class projects offer ideal opportunities for students to become global citizens.”
